In 1860, Officine Panerai started life as a watchmaker’s shop, which, rather unusually, also sold maritime equipment. Decades later, in the early 1900s, the brand became the official supplier for the Italian Frogmen, who famously wore their watches – designed in collaboration with Rolex SA – while piloting so-called human torpedos towards docked enemy ships. They would then attach limpet mines to these ships and, hopefully, make it back in time to avoid the explosions that followed. As you can imagine, a legible and dependable timekeeping device was an absolute must for these specialized soldiers, so that’s exactly what Panerai provided. The brand also supplied the Royal Italian Navy with a wide array of technical equipment and precision instruments, which further cemented its place in horological history.
Since Panerai tends to follow a similar design language for all its watches, the watch on offer here – the Radomir 1940 – is strongly reminiscent of its historical predecessors. Its large cushion-shaped case is inspired by those Rolex once produced, and the lack of a crown guard further enhances that impression. The creamy brown dial also gives off a more traditionalist vibe, following the well-established recipe of a seconds subdial as the only complication. Behind the sapphire caseback, the caliber P.4000 is ticking accurately.
