In 1952, the French government established the "Nageuers de combat" - an elite team of combat swimmers, whose missions included underwater intelligence, sabotage operations, and covert warfare, to name a few. Their captain, Bob Maloubier, realized his team needed a watch made especially to withstand the rugged tasks they were performing, so he drew up a design for one and approached Blancpain. One thing led to another, and, in 1953 - a whole year before the Submariner was revealed at the Basel Watch Fair - the Fifty Fathoms was born. The watch on offer here is a modern reimagining of the iconic original. The Fifty Fathoms Automatique comes equipped with a sleek, satin-brushed titanium case, which ensures the watch is just a stylish on the outside as it's tough on the inside. Both the bezel and the dial are very reminiscent in design to those of the original Fifty Fathoms, but their level of finishing is up to contemporary standards. They come in complementing shades of blue, which make the watch appear all that more sophisticated and refined. The dial is stunning to look at and it’s easily legible even in extreme lighting conditions, as befits a professional instrument of this caliber. Ticking steadily behind the display caseback is the beautifully-finished in-house cal. 1315 - an excellent piece of Swiss engineering boasting a power reserve of 120 hours.
