TAG Heuer has never been shy about celebrating its motorsports heritage, and why should it be? After all, some of the brand’s most iconic models trace their origins to technical innovations conceived at the racetrack – it does make sense that TAG would strive to live up to this prized legacy. Some 44 years after the iconic Carrera made its debut, the brand released the Grand Carrera collection, which put a modern twist on its predecessor’s design. Cars have come a long way since the 1960s, and the Grand Carrera Chronograph reflects that fact while also respecting the original Heuer design language. Its stainless case is bigger, yes, but it retains an old-fashioned appearance that echoes that of the original Carrera. The dial draws heavily from the automotive aesthetic of the 21st century – as is made evident by its subdials which resemble dashboard instruments – but it also incorporates some of the vintage-sort-of charm we associate with the classic racing chronograph. It features a date display at 6 o’clock, which further highlights the dial’s sporty symmetry, and is adorned with applied steel indices and sword-shaped hands. As is to be expected, the craftsmanship and attention to detail are on point. The sleek steel tachymeter bezel and discreet case profile mean that the watch pairs well even with more formal attire.
The Grand Carrera Chronograph is powered by the TAG Heuer Caliber 17 – a 37-jewel COSC-certified automatic chronograph movement.
