Created in 1945, the Datejust was the first self-winding waterproof chronometer wristwatch to display the date at the 3 o’clock position. Its pioneering aesthetic has since had an enormous cultural impact and, along with its revolutionary features, has elevated the model to the status of a horological icon. To put it plainly – the Datejust is the seminal classic watch.
The example on offer here – ref. 1603 – dates to 1970, and it showcases some of the best watchmaking of its era. Immediately drawing the eye in, the matte black dial beautifully backdrops a set of gently patina’d stick indices and sharp sword hands. Instead of the more familiar fluted bezel that has become so synonymous with the model, an engine-turned one encircles the dial, lending this elegant timepiece a dash of the utilitarian. Fitting, seeking how – despite its 36 mm size and elegant demeanor – the Datejust has always been a sports watch first and foremost. Inside the Oyster case, protected by the screw-down caseback, the time-proven caliber 1570 is ticking confidently away.
