In 1860 Officine Panerai started life as a watchmaker’s shop, which, rather unusually, also sold maritime equipment. Years later, in the early 1900s, the brand became the official supplier for the Italian Frogmen, who famously wore their watches – designed by Panerai and partly produced by Rolex SA – while riding torpedos towards docked enemy ships! As you can imagine, a legible and dependable underwater instrument was an absolute must for the Frogmen, and that’s precisely what Panerai provided. The brand also supplied the Royal Italian Navy with all manner of technical equipment and precision instruments, hence further cementing its place in horological history.
Since Panerai tends to follow a similar design language for all of its watches, the watch on offer here – the PAM00233 – strongly resembles its predecessors. Its large cushion-shaped case and protruding crown guard are both considered defining staples of Panerai design, and it’s not at all hard to see why they’re so beloved by the Paneristi. Other than the linear power reserve display and GMT subdial, the black sandwich dial also echoes the classic Panerai design. The movement inside, the in-house P.2002, boasts an 8-day power reserve (that’s 192 hours, for those of you wondering) and features a Glucydur balance and KIF Parechoc. The beautiful manually-wound movement is visible through the display caseback, and it is ticking per spec.
