Love it or hate it, the G-SHOCK is here to stay. Much like the Rolex Submariner (yes, we did just compare the two) the G-SHOCK was originally designed as a tool watch but has evolved into something of a fashion statement over time. Let there be no mistake – it still retains the qualities that made it the perfect watch to wrap around your wrist when chopping wood, working on your car, climbing mountains, or annoying your wife, but its popularity has changed it forever. Nowadays, there are innumerable variations of this cultural icon – some as rugged as ever, others modernistic, others still – simply fun. The one on offer here falls somewhere between the latter two categories. The GMW-B5000CS was revealed at Casio’s 2019 product exhibition in Tokyo, but its existence remained unknown to most people until about a few months ago. It goes without saying that its ‘skin’ got quite the reaction from the crowd. The 3D mesh pattern makes it look like it was taken straight out of a simulation and the black PVD coating plays into that illusion very well. It is only an illusion, however, and everything on it – from its bracelet to the caseback – is actually made out of solid steel. Better yet, the white lines that make up the unique look are laser engraved into the case! The watch feels really heavy on the wrist but in a decidedly good way. It’s unsurprisingly scratch-resistant and has all the functionality we’ve come to expect from the model, including several alarms, various timers, and a stopwatch. In addition, it has the option of connecting to your phone via Bluetooth, which in turn allows you to add additional functions through the official app – now that’s high-tech! Our offering is brand new and comes, in a full set of boxes and certificates.
