Breitling SA was founded in 1884 by Lèon Breitling – a passionate and innovative watchmaker.
In 1915, barely a year after he had passed, his son, Gaston, launched one of the world’s first wrist chronographs with a separate push-piece above the crown, proving that he had inherited his father’s pioneering spirit. The innovations continued well into the 1940’s and in 1952 – with Willy Breitling in the driver’s (or rather pilot’s) seat – the iconic Navitimer made its debut. It was equipped with the flight-specific slide rule that was introduced with the Chronomat, which made it very popular among pilots, airlines, and aircraft manufacturers and cemented the company’s legacy.
The watch on offer here is part of Breitling’s “Professional” lineup.
It was introduced at the start of 1998 after more than 2 years of development and featured an array of functionalities, which went highly appreciated by professional pilots, aviation enthusiasts and dedicated travelers of the skies. Having been built in 2019, our offering is a tad more modern. It comes in a solid, high-grade stainless steel case with a polished finish, whose design is as straightforward as it is appealing. The screw-down caseback is propeller-shaped, immediately conjuring up an appetite for the skies, and serves as an echo-chamber for the alarm. Each fan blade is individually welded onto the caseback, making for a breathtakingly detailed look. The B-1’s dial features two electro-luminescent digital displays for the various functions. Their layout has now become a sort of Breitling signature and is seen in other seminal models such as the Aerospace, the Chronospace and the Emergency. The rhodium hands are large and polished, thus easy to read even at the quickest of glances. Of course, the dial features the emblematic slide-rule inner bezel, which corroborates the piece’s aviation heritage. It’s moved by the massive sanded coin-edged bezel, which rotates in both directions and is of very sturdy construction.
The watch is powered by the highly accurate, ETA E20.331-based Caliber B68. It was serviced in 2019 and was kept very well in superb condition. Comes in full set of all the papers and booklets and all the inner & outer boxes.
The watch is covered by 1 year of limited warranty from ChronoTimepieces.
