Breitling SA was founded in 1884 by Léon Breitling – a passionate and innovative watchmaker known for his sharp business sense. In 1915 – barely a year after he had passed – his son, Gaston, proved he had inherited his father’s pioneering spirit by introducing one of the first-ever wrist chronographs with a separate push-piece above the crown. The brand’s innovations continued well into the 1940s, and in 1952 – with Willy Breitling in the driver’s (or rather pilot’s) seat – the Navitimer made its debut. The iconic model proved extremely popular among pilots, airlines, and aircraft manufacturers and would later go on to signify the beginning of Breitling’s avionic legacy.
The watch on offer here, the Crosswind, is an extension of that legacy.
Somewhat unusually, the ref. K13355 comes equipped with a 44 mm case fashioned out of solid 18k Yellow Gold. It is easy to see that the model strives to incorporate a degree of luxury into the familiar design, which nevertheless presents many of Breitling’s hallmarks, such as the bezel riders and the “onion” crown and chronograph pushers. The contrasting dial’s inner segment stands out thanks to its detailed diagonal texture, while the outer segment features applied gold Roman numeral indices stylized to fit into the opulent aesthetic of the piece. The gold subdial frames further enhance the effect and, together with the indices and hands, glisten beautifully against the black backdrop.
Hidden behind the stamped caseback, the Breitling caliber B13 is ticking accurately.
