Breitling SA was founded in 1884 by Léon Breitling – a passionate and innovative watchmaker known for his sharp business sense. In 1915 – barely a year after he had passed – his son, Gaston, proved he had inherited his father’s pioneering spirit by introducing one of the first-ever wrist chronographs with a separate push-piece above the crown. The brand’s innovations continued well into the 1940s, and in 1952 – with Willy Breitling in the driver’s (or rather pilot’s) seat – the Navitimer made its debut. The iconic model proved extremely popular among pilots, airlines, and aircraft manufacturers and would later come to signify the beginning of Breitling’s avionic legacy. The watch on offer here represents the natural progression of that same legacy.
As its name indicates, the Chronospace has its sights set on the final frontier of human exploration – Outer Space. Its aesthetic effortlessly communicates its intentions yet incorporates several classic Breitling design staples, such as the sleek polished case and the fluted bezel ring. The latter is bi-directional and features a pinion mechanism that lends it a very distinct – and pleasant – action. As for the case, it is by no means small since it is meant to go over a spacesuit sleeve, but it wears remarkably well on medium wrists thanks to its shape and finish. Inside, you’ll find one of Breitling’s most technically impressive movements – the thermocompensated cal. B78 SuperQuartz, which is guaranteed an accuracy of +-05 seconds per week. Much like the case, the black dial blends modern and traditional, featuring both a highly legible analog display and two 12/24 hr LCD digital displays with NVG compatible backlighting and an EOL indicator. It is covered by a double AR-coated cambered sapphire, which further enchances the dial’s legibility.
Functions include a 1/100th second chronograph with split times, an alarm amplified by a resonance chamber, a countdown timer that goes as high as 99 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes, 59.99 seconds (as does the chronograph), a 2nd timezone with an independent alarm function, UTC universal time indication, and a perpetual digital calendar.
The watch was just professionally polished and serviced and is in excellent cosmetic and functional condition. It comes in a full set of boxes and papers and is outfitted with its original mesh bracelet in full size.
The watch is covered by 1 year of limited warranty from ChronoTimepieces.
