A worthy successor to the legacy of its older Royal Oak brother, the Offshore Chronograph is an experience that is hard to put into words – and that’s a good thing. Much like its predecessor, the model represents an intense yearning for the future, but it nevertheless looks to the past, to the rich history it is part of, with the highest respect.
This Royal Oak Offshore Gentleman Driver was produced in a limited run of 40 pieces to celebrate the 2010 edition of the National Classic Tour race. Therefore, it features several flourishes that harken to the aesthetic of 20th-century automobile racing, such as the blocky SuperLuminova indices, the red-and-white colorway, and the checkered segment on the inner bezel. Somewhat controversially, the emblematic octagonal bezel has also been altered – it is embossed in this version of the model, echoing the rugged-yet-stylish look that has become synonymous with classic motorsports. Other than that, the model is exactly what one would expect: a masterfully crafted and flawlessly finished timepiece that is impossible to mistake for any other.
Inside, behind the commemorative caseback, the remarkable 50-jewel in-house caliber 2326/2840 is calmly ticking away.
