Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph 42 ref. 26165IO.OO.A002CA.01 Survivor – Blackened Titanium & Ceramic

A worthy successor to the legacy of its older Royal Oak brother, the Offshore Chronograph is an experience that is hard to put into words – and that’s a good thing. Much like its predecessor, the model represents a deep yearning for the future, but it nevertheless looks to the past, to the rich history it is part of, with the highest respect. In the case of the so-dubbed Survivor, however, tradition and heritage share the back seat, while 90’s sci-fi runs wonderfully amok behind the wheel.
The familiar geometry that started with the visionary Genta still shines through in the design, but otherwise, the watch looks rather like something you would wear while fending off an alien invasion. With this strapped to your wrist – preferably the one holding a plasma pistol or a lazer rifle – you might even stand a chance.
The 42 mm case is fashioned out of durable blackened titanium, while the grooved bezel comes in scratch-resistant ceramic, providing a neat contrast to the muted luster of the case’s hairline finish. The pushers likewise come clad in black ceramic, and they are protected by a set of articulating, exoskeleton-like crown guards. The latter, coupled with the hacksaw hands and strap decoration and the dark Mega Tappiserie dial, conjure up more associations with futuristic, dystopian tech and weaponry.
Behind the blast-door-inspired caseback, the in-house 3126/3840 is ticking confidently away.
