Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Master Calendar ref. 140.8.87 – Full set, Superb condition

While brands like Rolex and Omega have amassed recognition that has made them known to practically everybody inside and outside watch enthusiasts’ circles, there’s a family of brands that have remained less popular yet are more highly valued by truly discerning watch connoisseurs. The watch on offer here was made by one of those brands – Jaeger-LeCoultre. Ever since Antoine LeCoultre made horological history by creating the first instrument to measure the micron in 1884, JLC hasn’t stopped innovating, all the while keeping to the highest standards in Swiss watchmaking. Thanks to its history of producing high-quality movements, parts, and tools for brands such as Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet, and Patek Philippe, the company is popularly referred to as the watchmaker’s watchmaker.
This Master Calendar ref. 140.8.87 dates to the mid-end 2000s and is an excellent example of JLC’s capabilities. It comes outfitted with a two-body stainless steel case, whose caseback is secured into place by four screws located around the Master Control 1000 Hours logo. Two buttons on the side of the case operate the pointer date complication via its red-tipped crescent hand and give the watch a bit of a chronograph look. The incorporation of the former complication allows the silver, ever-so-delicate sunray dial to retain its clean and uncluttered design. Other features include white gold Arabic numeral and dart indexes, apertures for the day of the week and the month, a small seconds indicator, and luminous steel dauphine hands. The automatic caliber 891/447 that powers the watch was serviced in 2019 by our watchmaker and is still ticking accurately. The rhodium-plated movement boasts 36 jewels, a straight-line lever escapement, a monometallic balance adjusted to 5 positions, a 21K gold rotor segment, a self-compensating flat balance spring, and – last but not least – a beautiful Fausses Côtes decoration.
