2021 brought with itself a new iteration of the iconic Speedmaster, which, somewhat unsurprisingly, looks almost identical to the ones that preceded it. This impression, however, couldn’t be farther from the truth. On the contrary – nearly every element on the ref. 310.32.42.50.01.001 has been updated (and upgraded) in some way.
To start with, OMEGA has replaced the venerable Calibre 1861 with the far more modern Calibre 3861, which features a co-axial escapement and a silicon balance spring and is a member of the Master Chronograph family (as certified by the METAS institute).
The case retains the signature design introduced by the ST 105.012, but it has been made slightly thinner – measuring 13.6 mm instead of 14.3 mm – and so fits under the cuff even more easily. The lug-to-lug width has also been decreased – by around half a millimeter – and the polished bevel running across the case’s side has been made thinner, while the brushed band on the crown’s side has been made wider. The crown is also wider than that of previous iterations, which is sure to ease winding and time setting, and the pushers have been made shorter. Other than that, the execution is just as impeccable as is to be expected, with a finishing that is arguably cleaner and sharper than ever before.
And while the bezel material remains unchanged, its style has been brought back to the original layout of the 1960s’ Speedmasters. The most important change would have to be the step dial, which again harkens back to the classic 1960s’ Speedmasters. A few more minor changes to the finishing, the hands and dial, and the writing on caseback have also been made, resulting in what is – in our humble opinion – the coolest Speedmaster in years. Тhis new Hesalite version comes equipped with a black textile strap.
