IWC Aquatimer 42 300M Diver ref. IW329003 – Full set, Silver plated dial, Very fresh

Unveiled at the 1967 Basel Fair, the ref. 812AD Aquatimer was IWC’s first true diver’s watch. Today, over 50 years later, the company is still producing the eponymous model and is, impressively, still keeping to the original’s classic, singular aesthetic. The version on offer here follows the aforementioned’s design quite closely but is executed in a decidedly contemporary manner, targeting both the old-fashioned purists and the fastidious modernists.
The ref. IW329003 comes equipped with a robust stainless steel case that measures 42 mm in diameter, has a height of 18 mm, and features a notched steel bezel. Most of the case’s surface showcases a fine brushed finish, with subtle polished accents on the edges of the lugs, the face of the crown, and the top edge and underside of the bezel. The latter can only be turned anti-clockwise, which ensures that even if its external part is accidentally moved, the dive time – during which the diver can return to the surface with no need for decompression stops – will not be exceeded. The sliding clutch located on the case’s left side is the key to this innovative system.
As far as the dial is concerned, it makes it very easy to tell that functionality was the main motivating factor behind this timepiece. It features broad applied indices and chunky baton hands, whose superb luminescent coatings guarantee legibility even in complete darkness. The central seconds hand, meanwhile, incorporates a triangular tip outlined in vivid yellow, which serves as a delightful embellishment to an otherwise utilitarian overall design.
Like all members of the Aquatimer family, the ref. IW329003 is ISO-certified as a professional diver’s watch, and, not unlike other professional divers, it features a plain screw-in caseback. Hidden away behind it, the IWC caliber 30120 automatic is ticking per spec.
