Founded in 1846 in Le Locle, Switzerland, Ulysse Nardin is known in both the watchmaking and the nautical worlds for its highly accurate, highly complicated marine chronometers, which were used by over fifty of the world’s navies throughout the 1900s. Today, the company produces similarly complicated luxurious timepieces targeted at those who value individuality and character above all else, and whose second home is the stormy ocean. Having said that, not all of the brand’s modern watches are made equal. Take the one on offer here.
The San Marco Classico is an extraordinarily understated timepiece to see from Ulysse Nardin. It stands out from the deck chronometer-inspired aesthetic of other models and doesn’t bear any references to the brand’s ties to marine engineering and naval warfare (except for the iconic anchor logo, of course), instead opting for a dapper yet sophisticated look evocative of traditional watchmaking. The dial features a fine sunburst finish, which acts as a backdrop for its slim hour indices and delicate leaf hands. Measuring at the universal 40 mm, the case also follows a vintage-inspired design with the lugs being its most distinct feature. They definitely lend an aggressive aspect to the San Marco.
Thanks to the high-quality leather strap, the watch fits wears very comfortably. You probably won’t be surprised to learn that it pairs well with both casual and dressier attire.
Inside, proudly displayed by the exhibition caseback, the cal. UN-815 is confidently ticking away.
