It was in 1961 that Seiko released the Alpinist – its first real attempt at producing a sports watch. As Japan’s landscape is quite mountainous, it made sense that the brand would finally create a watch for climbers, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts. Unsurprisingly, it proved to be not just an excellent timepiece but an excellent piece of professional equipment capable of withstanding the rough handling and adverse weather conditions associated with mountaineering. The legendary SARB017 made its debut 45 years later, and it would mark the rebirth of the archetypal Alpinist.
The ref. SPB259 is the most recent (limited edition) iteration of the iconic model. As such, it commemorates Seiko’s 140th Anniversary and its familial relationship to Ginza by capturing the modern face of the Chūō, Tokyo district. The dial comes in an eye-catching blue-green, and its remarkable pattern is said to represent its cobblestone-laden streets. It incorporates two distinct sunray finishes, which serve as the backdrop for a set of aggressive triangular indices and sword hands. The one that counts through the seconds embraces Komparu – a traditional Japanese color named after Komparu Street, which was once the heart of Ginza’s nightlife. Originating in the middle Meiji era, this blue pigment with soft green undertones was a favorite among the many geishas who lived there. As can be expected from Seiko, the steel that encases this gorgeous weave of colors and textures is just as masterfully finished, blending fine hairline with Seiko’s signature Zaratsu polishing.
Inside, proudly showcased by the exhibition caseback, the marvel of Japanese engineering that is the 6R35 is ticking resolutely away.
Our offering is in very good condition, comes in a full set of boxes and papers, but unfortunately comes only on a suitable aftermarket leather strap – the original bracelet was lost by the previous owner.
