The Rolex Explorer has been evolving for over half a century, but its foundational principles have remained unchanged throught the decades – simplicity, reliability, and adaptability. It’s a sports watch, that much is clear, but thanks to its clean lines and sleek silhouette, it feels as much at home in the boardroom or the bar as it does on the mountainside. Of course, the latter is where the Explorer earned its reputation – Rolex designed it for testing on Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary’s 1953 expedition to Mount Everest. The ref. 1655 that Norgay wore can still be seen at the Beyer Museum in Zurich, Switzerland, which many consider an important site of horological pilgrimage.
And the ref. 124270, a true embodiment of the classic Explorer design. Measuring at a diameter of 36 mm, it carries the same iconic style as its predecessor. However, it boasts modern updates such as a solid-endlink bracelet and contemporary case geometry. The watch’s black lacquered dial is understated yet elegant, shielded by a flat sapphire crystal for protection. Powering this timepiece is the cal. 3230. With its timeless design and reliable functionality, the Explorer is a watch that is sure to impress.
