The X-33 Skywalker was a move that nobody was expecting from Omega. After all, why would they risk offending a significant chunk of their core audience when they could comfortably continue drawing from the Speedmaster’s prodigal history practically forever? Well, because the art of watchmaking has never progressed by dwelling on the past for too long – that’s as true of Genta as it is of Casio.
The question that conceived the Skywalker must have sounded something like: “What would you wear on a transgalactic voyage?”, which was likely changed, for brevity’s sake, to: “What would Luke Skywalker wear?” before being drafted on the meeting room whiteboard. All joking aside, it really would be hard to believe that the brilliant minds over at OMEGA are ignorant of the last true Jedi’s adventures or of what his name signifies to so many people, еspecially since it seems to represent the same things here.
Unlike its predecessor, this isn’t a watch meant to be hurled at break-neck speed at nearby celestial bodies. No, this is a timepiece that has every intention of stroll leisurely from star system to star system. It wears light and feels as if was laser cut from a single piece of aluminum, which it mostly was. Since it was designed to be an astronaut’s closest companion, it incorporates all the functions that such a role requires. Those include three different time zones, a chronograph, a timer, MET (Mission Elapsed Time), PET (Phase Elapsed Time), three alarms, and a perpetual calendar, all courtesy of the exceedingly precise thermo-compensated quartz movement inside – the OMEGA caliber 5619.
As far as the X-33 Skywalker’s aesthetics are concerned, we’ll let our pictures do the talking. What we will say is that no one but OMEGA could have pulled off such a dramatic facelift.
