Franck Muller Vanguard Titanium 45 ref. V45 SC DT TT BR NR – Full set, 2019, Polished

Franck Muller might be one of the younger brands in the world of Haute Horlogerie, but it has already earned itself a fair bit of clout. When watchmaker Franck Muller and case maker Vartan Sirmakes started their company in 1991, the two men agreed it would specialize in watches that render historical complications in modern and spectacular ways, and they have done precisely so. Judging by the exciting designs that they have been coming up with, the aesthetic side of their work is no less important to the duo.

The watch on offer here – the appropriately named Vanguard – makes some of the best use of the brand’s so-dubbed Curvex architecture to date. The Titanium case’s smooth finish is a wonderful compliment to the ergonomic profile and the dial, a dramatic display of numerals cascading in a whimsical dance, provides a realm where time doesn’t just tick, but prances with a playful mirth, each hour and minute a note in the harmonious melody of the now. By incorporating 3-dimensional titanium grey numerals, it overpowers the sleek case in a way that couldn’t possibly be accurately conveyed with words. They also showcase the high-contrast, almost comic book look that the red components and detailing contribute.
Sir Sirmakes (sorry, couldn’t resist) has decided to go with the brand-typical brushed caseback instead of the transparent one, and it does perhaps seem like the right choice. Protected by it, the new Franck Muller cal. FM 800-DT automatic movement ticks charmingly away.
