Omega Speedmaster ’57 Chronograph 38.6 ref. 311.10.39.30.01.001 The 1957 Trilogy – NEW, 2022

You’d be forgiven for thinking of the Moon or outer space when you see a Speedmaster – аfter all, that’s what you’ve been conditioned to associate it with, and with good reason. As origin stories go, one could hardly do any better than the Moonwatch, which was famously ticking on Armstrong’s wrist as he took his “small step” from Apollo 13’s ladder to the rocky lunar surface. When it was designed, however, the Speedy wasn’t meant to visit outer space, let alone another celestial body. Quite the contrary – when it made its debut in 1957, the so-dubbed “Broad Arrow” CK 2915 was aimed at the budding amateur motorsports market. The late 50s and early 60s are referred to as the Golden Age of Motorsports due to the surge in their popularity and accessibility, which in turn led to an increased demand for sports chronographs.

The “Broad Arrow” was not only the first Speedmaster, but it was also the first chronograph wristwatch in the world with its tachymeter scale engraved into the bezel as opposed to printed onto the dial. As a 60th Anniversary tribute to one of three watches released in 1957, this Speedmaster stays true to its predecessor’s iconic design right down to the faux-patina and the movement – the Lemania-based caliber 1861. The latter, as you might know, is a relative of the caliber 321 used in the CK 2915.
