A worthy successor to the legacy of its older Royal Oak brother, the Offshore Chronograph is an experience that is hard to put into words – and that’s a good thing. Much like its predecessor, the model represents an intense yearning for the future, but it nevertheless looks to the past, to the rich history it is part of, with the highest respect.
The ref. 26170ST.OO.D091CR.01 – a.k.a. the 1st generation Safari – is one of the purest iterations of this groundbreaking model. It comes equipped with a balanced 42 x 54 mm case, whose every surface has received the utmost care and attention, resulting in a level of finishing that borders on impossible. The case’s complex geometry and satin finish give it a four-dimensional presence, which its beveled edges expertly soften. The remarkable Mega Tappeserie dial within has always been the centerpiece of the Royal Oak’s design, mirroring the geometrical design language of the case and proudly showcasing AP’s unwavering devotion to expert craftsmanship, but that’s far from all. On the contrary, it is precisely the elusive alchemy of all the Offshore’s elements that turns it into a magical wearing experience. For example, whereas the unidirectionally-brushed octagonal bezel captures the light, the white-gold indices and hands reflect it back at the wearer, producing an eye-catching (pun intended) contrast and enhancing legibility. Last but not least, the Safari comes outfitted with a remarkable crocodile leather hornback strap!
Inside, safely tucked away behind the solid caseback, the trusty 3126/3840 is ticking confidently away.
