Breitling SA was founded in 1884 by Léon Breitling – a passionate and innovative watchmaker known for his sharp business sense. In 1915, barely a year after he had passed, his son, Gaston, proved he had inherited his father’s pioneering spirit by introducing one of the first-ever wrist chronographs with a separate push-piece above the crown. Gaston’s own son, Willy, followed up his father’s achievement with the world’s first two-pusher chronograph wristwatch, the Chronomat, which made its debut in 1940. The first iteration of the Chronomat featured a circular slide rule, and its design followed the appeal and design cues of the era’s military watches. More importantly, it was the watch that started Breitling’s avionic legacy, which we’re all familiar with.
The watch on offer here, the limited edition ref. AB0110 Chronomat, celebrates the aerobatic demonstration team of the Italian Air Force, whose relationship with Breitling dates back to the mid-80s when they chose Breitling as their official supplier.
As you can see from our photos, the ref AB0110 features many of Breitling’s unmistakable design staples. It features a 44 mm steel case topped by a unidirectional bezel with stencil-style numerals and fitted with a screw-down crown and pushers. Since it’s one of Breitling’s flagship models, the Chronomat is powered by the in-house Breitling Caliber 01 chronograph movement, which utilizes 47 jewels, operates at 28,800 vph, and boasts a power reserve of at least 70 hours. The movement and the appealing dial are protected by 500 meters of water resistance and a sapphire crystal with a dual-sided anti-reflective coating. Under the latter, the large applied hands and markers lend the Chronomat a very tool-like charm, and the brushed case further grounds it in the tool-watch aesthetic. Fittingly, the chronograph is fully pilot-ready, offering central seconds with 1/4th of a second resolution backed by both a 30-minute and a 12-hour totalizer. Lastly, a dial-matched white-on-black date display is stealthily incorporated between the four and five o’clock markers.
Our offering is in excellent condition, comes in its original boxes but without papers, and is outfitted with its OEM rubber strap. Ticking per specs.
The watch is covered by 1 year of limited warranty from ChronoTimepieces.
