Bovet was founded in 1822 by Edouard Bovet, who – like many watchmakers of his day – had his sights set on the Chinese market. He established his company’s headquarters in London due to the ease of transportation ensured by the East India Company’s frequent ships, but he insisted that the brand’s manufacturing facilities be set up and run by one of his three brothers in Fleurier, Switzerland.
Bovet wasn’t the first manufacturer to target China, so it had to contend with the likes of Vacheron Constantin and Jaques Ullmann, who had had a considerable headstart. Despite the harsh competition, however, Bovet’s timepieces proved exceedingly popular in the more populated south part of the country, while Vacheron Constantin continued to dominate imperial northern China.
Today, Bovet is recognized as one of the most collectible vintage brands, and watches like the one on offer here are looked upon favorably by enthusiasts since they more than lived up to the high standards set by the brand’s contemporaries.
This chronograph is in very good condition despite some considerable wear on the case. The well-preserved dial has accrued some patina but has never been retouched or otherwise tampered with, and the rare Landeron caliber 51 within is ticking accurately, having undergone thоrough servicing and testing at the hands of our very own in-house watchmaker. The cherry on top – the watch comes outfitted with a brand new high-quality leather strap with blue stitching that matches the tempered blue hands rather nicely.
Covered by a limited warranty of 1 year, starting on the date of purchase.
