Pierce SA was founded in 1883 in Biel, Switzerland, by Leon Levy and his two brothers. By 1910, the family-owned company had expanded substantially, providing employment for over 1,500 of the city’s 24,000 inhabitants. About two decades later, Pierce introduced the first in a series of in-house calibers, one of which would end up winning them the contract for the development and construction of a specialized pilot’s watch for the Royal Air Force – the Flight Calendar. Another of their emblematic models was the mechanical-alarm Duofon, which made its debut in 1956, and whose name denoted its ability to deliver an alarm signal both loudly and silently. Even throughout the Quartz crisis of the 1970s, the company remained faithful to the art of purely mechanical watchmaking and saw no need to change its ways, which was what would ultimately spell its end.
The charming little watch on offer here dates to the 1930s and is powered by one of Pierce’s most controversial movements – the caliber 134, which was manufactured and completed entirely in-house. It employs a spring-loaded vertical clutch that connects the movement and the chronograph module, allowing it to be operated via a single pusher. Servicing it was rather challenging, but the quirky complication is now functioning perfectly, and the watch is keeping good time. What’s more, it’s in great cosmetic condition, with a well-preserved dial and a case that shows normal signs of wear. Please note that the hour and minutes hands have been relumed, but that’s pretty much par for the course with watches this old.
Our offering comes outfitted with a brand new leather strap. Keeping perfect time.
