The Snowflake is arguably the most popular watch in Grand Seiko’s line-up, and with good reason. Its magnificent dial – the reason behind its nickname – has captured the imagination of watch enthusiasts around the world as few other timepieces have, and the movement housed within has often been called “the most advanced watch movement in existence”. The watch on offer here, the Blue Snowflake (a.k.a. the Skyflake), draws inspiration from the wind-swept snow in the mountains of Shinshu and showcases a subtle blue hue that enlivens the hypnotic texture of its dial. The steel that encases the latter measures at a balanced 40.2mm, with a lug-to-lug of 48.5mm and a thickness of just 12.8mm. Of course, like most GS’s, it’s endowed with a mirror-like Zaratsu polishing, which highlights its dynamic geometry and complements its sword hands and applied indices. Inside, proudly displayed by the sapphire caseback, the venerated 9R35 Spring Drive movement is ticking calmly away. It ensures precision equal to that of a quartz watch while using a mainspring as its power source and employing a magnetic brake that enables the tranquil sweeping motion of the seconds hand.
