The Speedmaster has had quite the journey in the last six decades.
Originally a 1957 chronograph, it singlehandedly started a chrono craze in the budding motorsports market of the time, after which it was picked up by NASA for Walter Schirra’s 1962 Sigma 7 mission. Later, as you know, it would end up ticking on Neil Armstrong’s wrist as he is taking his “small step” from Apollo 13’s ladder to the rocky lunar surface. This event would also inspire a myriad of limited editions, reruns, and reissues in the following years, making the Speedmaster one of the most popular timepieces in the world. Among its many versions, there have been numerous and ingenious ways of celebrating its colorful history, but perhaps none quite like the one seen here.
The Moonphase Chronograph, as its name suggests, features a photo-realistic Moonphase complication that ties it to the planetary body that is at the heart of so much of what makes the Speedmaster special. Behind a sapphire caseback, the METAS-certified OMEGA Co-Axial Master Chronometer cal. 9904 is ticking accurately.
