Founded in 1860 by Louis-Ulysse Chopard in Sonvilier, Switzerland, Chopard is best known for its high-end watches and masterfully-crafted jewelry. The brand has long had a tendency to blur the line between the two, however, resulting in an array of exquisite, often avant-garde timepieces. The one on offer here, the Alpine Eagle, stands as the manufacturer’s first foray into the world of integrated-bracelet luxury sports watches, and it is undeniably an impressive horological achievement.
Now, some of you will surely accuse the Alpine Eagle of being too derivative by way of imitating the Royal Oak or the Nautilus, but let us try to convince you otherwise.
For one thing, this watch is backed by a rich history of its own – it represents a reinterpretation of the 1980’s St. Moritz, which Karl-Friedrich Scheufele conceived at the tender age of 22. Imagined and personally designed by him, the Alpine Eagle draws from his passion for the Alps and his admiration for the royal eagle that reigns supreme there. Moreover, it more than lives up to Haute Horology standards and incorporates some downright remarkable features, such as the stunning textured dial, which could give Grand Seiko a good run for their money. The case, meanwhile, is flawlessly constructed and finished, blending finely brushed and mirror-polished surfaces that together emphasize its exceptional architecture. The same goes for the bracelet, which stands out as one of the most comfortable and ergonomic we’ve had the pleasure to experience.
At a balanced 41 mm in diameter, the watch wears very well as a daily driver, effortlessly fitting under any cuff and feeling light and versatile in doing so. Inside, proudly displayed by the sapphire caseback, the Chopard 01.01-C is calmly ticking away. Its finishing is an extension of the brushed-and-polished theme of the case and bracelet and is thereby a bit industrial but a pleasure to behold nonetheless.
Our offering is in excellent condition and comes in a full set of boxes and papers.
