While the G-Shock was originally designed as a humble tool watch, it has evolved into something of a fashion statement over the last decade. Let there be no mistake, however – it still retains the qualities that make it the perfect watch to wrap around your wrist when hiking up a mountain, chopping wood, or working on your car, but both its functionalities and its aesthetics have undergone major transformations. In fact, today’s G-Shock collection is nothing more than a collection of successors to the simple-but-iconic DW-5000C – some rugged, others stylish, others still – simply funky. The model on offer here falls somewhere between the former two categories.
The GMWB5000GD-9 can be described, to an extent, as a reinvention of the 1983′ DW-5000C. Its emblematic square case resembles that of its distant predecessor, but it is fashioned out of solid steel and equipped with cutting-edge shock-resistant technology. Both the case and the bracelet are fully IP coated, which makes them exceptionally scratch-resistant. Their alluring golden luster is contrasted by the black display, and the brick pattern around the display is actually the cell for the module inside, the 3459 Tough Solar.
Functions include: Bluetooth Smart, Solar Power, Smartphone Time, Multi-Band 6 Atomic Time Calibration, 12/24-Hour Timekeeping, Automatic Calendar with Date, Day and Month, Phone Finder, Flight Log Memory, 5 Daily Alarms, Timer, and World Time With 39 Time Zones. Oh, and an awesome cyan Super Illuminator LED backlight.
