Among all of Omega’s historic timepieces, few are as widely recognized and celebrated as the Speedmaster – even the watch worn by agent 007 can’t hope to compete with the world’s most renowned chronograph, and that’s saying something. Having been a part of all six lunar missions, the legendary Moonwatch encapsulates the Swiss manufacturer’s philosophy of innovation, as well as their pioneering and adventurous spirit.
Just like the one worn by Neil Armstrong, the model on offer here features a Hesalite crystal instead of a scratch-resistant sapphire one. You might also be wondering why the ref. 311.33.42.30.01.001 is not automatic, and the answer to that is quite simple – because the original Moonwatch wasn’t either. Since there is no gravity in space, the rotor wouldn’t have wound the mainspring properly, so Omega opted for the use of a hand-wound movement instead. In fact, the caliber 1861 seen here is a direct descendent of the legendary mechanical movement that was ticking on Armstrong’s wrist when he took his giant leap from the lander’s ladder to the Lunar surface. Mirroring its aesthetics as well as its functionality, the 311.33.42.30.01.001 features a black dial with a small seconds sub-dial, 30-minute and 12-hour recorders, and a central chronograph hand. The black tachymetric bezel is mounted on a 42 mm stainless steel case and is complemented by a high-quality black leather strap.
Our offering comes with the model’s original Moonwatch presentation box, which contains a NATO strap, a strap for astronauts, a spring bar tool, and a book chronicling the Speedmaster’s epic adventures. The watch was just polished and is in flawless cosmetic condition. Ticking per specs.
