Vintage Movado Celestograph/Astrograph Triple Date Moonphase in 18k Gold ref. R4920 – cal. 473, Serviced, 1949

Ever since it started its life in 1881, Movado has been a consistent harbinger of innovation. The company is accredited with having introduced the first wristwatch to display the day, date, and month – the Calendomatic – and having built the first movement constructed on three planes, which allowed the case to follow the curvature of the wearer’s wrist. Movado translates to “always in motion” (from international Esperanto), and the brand’s slogan, “Modern Ahead Of Its Time”, encapsulates its philosophy. As the watch on offer here will testify, those are more than just mere catchphrases.
The Movado Celestograph/Astrograph ref. R4920 dates to the 1940s and comes equipped with a solid 18k gold case, whose fluted teardrop lugs accentuate its distinct wrist presence. The years have not been kind to the dial, but they have lent it a beautiful ambiance that adds to the piece’s old-timey charm. It features applied gilt dot and Arabic numeral indices, a black outer minute track with five-minute markers and blue date indications, polished gilt leaf hands, and a lollipop calendar hand. The subsidiary dial at 6 o’clock displays constant seconds and moon phase, and the apertures at 2 and 10 indicate the day and the month. Somewhat unusually, the case features quick-set buttons at 4, 8, and 10 o’clock. Hidden behind inscribed caseback, the freshly serviced 15-jewel caliber 473 is ticking confidently away. We’ve chosen to not polish out the initials of the previous owner so as to preserve the history of the watch.
