Rolex Explorer I 34 ref. 5500 – The Air-King Case, Super Rare dial, cal. 1570, 1974, Perfect

While Rolex’s modern collections are very clearly defined – each with its unique set of selling points (and plenty of marketing materials to describe its myriad of features) – things weren’t so simple 50-or-so years ago. Take the watch on offer here.
This 5500 Explorer is a controversial piece. What makes it controversial is the unusual dial, which features the complete “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” script. Since there are only a few known examples like it, it has sparked numerous debates among collectors. When it comes to our example, however, the authenticity of all parts (movement components, dial, and case) was confirmed by a Rolex expert, whom we trust and are willing to vouch for.
The condition of the watch is quite good. The previous owner claims that it was polished and serviced at an official AD some 3 years ago, but there is no card present to prove his claims. The bracelet is a 78350-19 with 557 end-links and an X 3 date code, which indicates that it was fitted at a later point. According to the Rolex expert whom we consulted, this dial variation of the model was produced only for a few years and was exclusive to the US/Canadian market.

Covered by a limited warranty of 1 year, starting on the date of purchase.
