Aviation has long been the core focus of Breitling’s marketing, and rightly so. After all, the Navitimer is one of the most influential pilot’s watches ever conceived, and its release in 1952 marks the beginning of the brand’s long-standing relationship with the aviation industry. The piece on offer here, however, harkens back to a different chapter of Breitling’s history.
The SuperOcean Steelfish is a chunky watch, no doubt about that. Back in 2006, however, there weren’t many 250-gram 44 mm watches one could buy that looked as good. Thanks to the incorporation of signature design elements such as the steel bezel and its unique riders, the watch gives off a distinctly tactical feel. The aggressive applied Roman numeral and dot indices add to the utilitarian aesthetic, while the brushed steel case gives the piece a sleek, refined aspect. The cherry on top – the Steelfish is water-resistant down to the ridiculous depth of 2000 m, which makes it a more than worthy successor to the original 1957 SuperOcean.
The SuperOcean A17390 is powered by the Breitling cal. B17 – a dependable automatic caliber based on the ETA cal. 2824-2.
