As the 20th century dawned, Officine Panerai achieved a historic milestone by becoming the official supplier to the Italian Frogmen, an elite cadre known for their daring exploits. Clad in Panerai watches developed in collaboration with Rolex SA, these fearless warriors embarked on perilous missions, attaching limpet mines to enemy ships and racing against the clock to escape impending explosions. In such hazardous circumstances, legible and dependable timekeeping became paramount, and Panerai rose to the challenge. The brand also supplied the Royal Italian Navy with a formidable array of technical equipment and precision instruments, solidifying its place in horological history.

The 40mm Luminor case of the PAM00159, not unusually, features a polished bezel and is paired with a classy brown leather strap. Panerai’s unmistakable design language and dial layout are evident, but this model stands out with its extra hand. As the name suggests, the former denotes the GMT complication, expertly balanced by a cyclops-magnified date display. While the 00159 may not be Panerai’s first foray into GMT watches, it certainly stands as one of the more impressive models, especially from a technical standpoint. The flawless finishing and construction meet the expectations set by the brand, and the dial, adorned with a mix of Super-LumiNova Arabic and spot indices, is as beautiful as ever.

Inside, protected by the solid caseback, the calibre OP VIII – a 21-jewel movement based on the venerable ETA 7750 – is ticking confidently away.
