Introduced at the end of the 1960s, the Zenith Defy was designed by none other than legendary Gerald Genta. In addition to its imaginative case architecture – courtesy of Genta’s signature magic – the Defy boasted features like shock and water resistance, which prompted its memorable nickname, The Safe Of Time. Its novel aesthetic resonated with the changing tastes of the topsy-turvy 70s, so it effortlessly established itself as a timeless classic.

The newest iteration of the Defy, the so-dubbed Skyline, incorporates all the case and bracelet geometry and flawless finishing of the Defy Classic but supplements them with a vintage-Defy-style dodecagonal bezel. Another thing that sets it apart from its direct predecessor is the new movement characterized by a 1/10th second sub-dial, which – we’ve got to admit – is remarkably mesmerizing to look at, especially since it’s backdropped by a striking starry texture. Zenith’s choice of dial was widely criticized when the Skyline was initially unveiled, and we were among its chief critics, but seeing it up close and personal, we can confidently say that it has become one of our favourite Defy dials. Adorned with the staple Zenith hands and faceted indices, it truly is a sight to behold.
Inside, proudly showcased by the display caseback, the El Primero 3620 is confidently – and beautifully – ticking away. With a typical El Primero frequency of 36,000 VPH, it boasts a 60-hour power reserve and is similar in architecture to the El Primero Chronograph 1/10th second movement featured in the Chronomaster Sport.
