In 1909, renowned French aviator Louis Blériot became the first man to fly across the English Channel. Strapped to his wrist was a Zenith watch with a chrome-plated case, a palpable onion-shaped crown, and a black enamel dial marked “Special” and adorned with distinct Arabic numerals and cathedral hands. As you might have already guessed, it was precisely Blériot’s timepiece (and historic achievement) that served as the inspiration behind the watch on offer here.
The Pilot Type 20 Extra Special comes equipped with a hefty 45 mm case that evokes the spirit of the early 1900s but fits right in with modern design trends. To get it en par with the style of the era Zenith went with aged steel for it and paired it with a grained slate grey dial to further emphasizing the watch’s grand demeanor. From a technical standpoint, the Type 20 is anything but old-timey, featuring a decidedly modern construction and starring a set of Arabic numeral indices made entirely of SuperLuminova & cathedral hands. Behind the Café Racer engraved caseback, the in-house caliber 679 “Elite” is confidently ticking away.
