A worthy successor to the legacy of its older Royal Oak brother, the Offshore Chronograph is an experience that is hard to put into words – and that’s a good thing. Much like its predecessor, the model represents an intense yearning for the future, but it nevertheless looks to the past, to the rich history it is part of, with the highest respect.
However, while the original Royal Oak is a somber, high-cultured timepiece, the Offshore has no problem letting its hair down and having a ball. The watch on offer here owes its existence namely to this more free-spirited approach to watchmaking.
First and foremost, this Limited Edition represents an encounter between two masterpieces: the Offshore Diver and the Offshore Chronograph. It incorporates all the essential Royal Oak design staples – which, of course, trace their origin to the visionary Gerald Genta – but it presents them in a totally unrestrained manner. The Orange Mega Tappeserie dial, for example – while just as reality-defyingly flawless – is undeniably more eye-catching than those of its predecessors. Its broad hands and applied indices are fashioned out of blackened white gold, which assures that their luster will not fade with time and which, by virtue of the bright lume encased within, provide remarkable legibility regardless of lighting conditions. The iconic octagonal bezel, meanwhile, comes in vertically brushed stainless steel instead of black ceramic, which brings the watch closer to the look of the original 1971 Royal Oak while also letting the beautiful dial take center stage. The rest of the case is also covered in a fine brushed finish interspersed with numerous beveled edges and polished details that soften its 4-dimensional presence. As befits a diver of this pedigree, the watch comes equipped with a comfy integrated rubber strap, which mirrors the dial’s loud color.
At the center of this illustrious composition – and proudly showcased by the exhibition caseback – the brilliant manufacturer Caliber 3124/4841 is ticking confidently away. It consists of 59 jewels/364 parts, operates at a frequency of 3Hz (21.600vph), and boasts 50 hours of power reserve when fully wound.
