During the 1960s, four major brands got into intense competition over creating the first-ever self-winding chronograph wristwatch. Heuer and Breitling collaborated and received the support of Hamilton, Buren, and Dubois-Depraz, whereas Zenith and Seiko chose to go their own ways. By early 1969, all four companies had come up with a chronograph wristwatch that featured automatic winding, and they had all done remarkable jobs. The Caliber 11 from Heuer, the 6139 from Seiko, and Zenith’s El Primero all proved to be accurate and reliable, well-engineered movements, each of which would go on to inspire a diverse line-up of respective successors. The watch on offer here – ref. 03.0510.4002 – is one of those successors.
The El Primero Class T dates to the late 2000s and presents a dressier interpretation of the time-tested concept. It is surprisingly subdued for an El Primero and can be described as a 1950s chronograph renovated for the new Millenium. Measuring in at 40 mm in diameter, it underlines the masculinity of the wearer’s wrist instead of overshadowing it, which modern watches often struggle with.
Notably, this variation of the model lacks a 12-hour counter, which enhances the symmetry of the dial. Of course, staples of El Primero design such as the slanted date display between 4 and 5 o’clock and the aggressive applied indices are as present as always. The case features a combination of brushed and polished surfaces that underlines its detailed architecture, as well as a transparent caseback that proudly displays the horological marvel inside – the in-house caliber 4002. The latter was serviced in 2020 by previous owner and is currently ticking per spec.
Our offering is in very good condition, comes with its original boxes and is equipped with its OEM bracelet.
The watch is covered by 1 year of limited warranty from ChronoTimepieces.
