Zenith Defy El Primero 21 Ceramic Skeleton Certified Chronometer ref. 49.9000.9004/78.R782 – 1/100th Chronograph, 2019

Introduced at the end of the 1960s, the Zenith Defy was designed by none other than legendary Gerald Genta. In addition to its imaginative case architecture – courtesy of his signature magic – the Defy boasted features like shock and water resistance, which prompted its memorable nickname, The Safe Of Time. Its novel aesthetic resonated with the changing tastes of the topsy-turvy 70s, so it effortlessly established itself as a timeless classic.
The reinterpretation on offer here dates to 2019 and is powered by the cutting-edge El Primero cal. 9004 1/100 of a second chronograph movement – the culmination of a half-century-long quest for horological perfection. Zenith gave it the “21” designation because they believe it to be THE automatic chronograph of the 21st century, and it would be impossibly difficult to dispute their claim.
What’s more, this version of the Defy El Primero 21 comes equipped with a dapper, fittingly-futuristic black ceramic case, whose design, although not thought up by him, would have put a smile on Genta’s face.
Last but not least, the skeletonized dial provides the perfect backdrop for the star-ornamented sweep-seconds hand, the luminescent baton hands, and the facetted hour-markers. It is made all the more hypnotic by the motion of the chronograph hand, which fulfills one full revolution per second.
Our offering is in superb condition, comes in a full set of boxes and papers, and is outfitted with its original rubber strap with Titanium double folding clasp with Black DLC coating.
