Vintage Tavannes Chronograph ref. 930 with Venus cal. 175 from 1950s – Serviced, Tempered blue hands

In 1891 the young and talented watchmaker Henri-Frédéric Sandoz founded the Tavannes Watch Company in a small rural Swiss village in the Jura mountains. He and his partners were quite well off thanks to their success in fabric trading, so it wasn’t long before they were manufacturing masterfully-crafted high-end watches to rival those of the brands that had beat them to the punch. Today, the company still survives, unlike the many who fell victim to the dreaded quartz crisis of the 1870s. According to their own website, they were the first brand to advertise a waterproof wristwatch all the way back in 1917 – their not-so-famous Submarine. Now, if you’re anything like us, you’ll take that statement with a pinch of salt, but regardless, you have to admit that the watch on offer here gives some legitimacy to such a claim.

For one thing, the incorporation of one of the most iconic movements ever assembled – the Venus cal. 175 – attests to TWC’s reverence for watchmaking tradition. The case, which displays some expected signs of wear, showcases a dynamic, eye-catching geometry and so further testifies to their attention to detail and devotion to exciting watchmaking. The cherry on top – the classic dial comes adorned with tempered blue hands, which really make it pop.
