The tides of time have buried things that we will never know existed, and somehow that is part of what makes vintage watches special to us. The romantic appeal of an 80-year-old watch made by a long-forgotten manufacturer and worn by a man whose name or profession you will never know, whose hand you will never shake… well, it is undeniable. For one thing, it leaves a lot of room for the imagination.
Atana-Sport was a subsidiary of Gallet, which is often cited as the oldest manufacturer in the history of watchmaking. Its roots stretch all the way back to Hubertus Gallet – a clockmaker who became a citizen of Geneva in 1466 – which gives these claims a degree of veracity. The chronograph on offer here dates to the 1940s and is in excellent condition. It showcases a pleasing champagne patina, which only adds to its mystique. Even after 80 years, its case remains knife-edge sharp due to never having been polished. Inside, the venerable Venus cal. 140 is ticking confidently away, having just been serviced by our master watchmaker in 11.2022.
The watch comes outfitted with a brand-new open ended leather strap (something hard to find these days for welded lugs like the ones on this watch).
Covered by a limited warranty of 1 year, starting on the date of purchase.
