Rumor has it that, at some point, Rolex planned to discontinue our beloved Submariner in favor of a new, re-imagined version of the watch. The Swiss manufacturer supposedly scrapped its plans to replace the emblematic diver at the last minute and chose to release the design they had been working on as an entirely separate model instead. Now, these rumors are likely hogwash, but taking a closer look at the watch on offer here, it’s not too hard to imagine them true.
Whereas the iconic Submariner owes its popularity to the utilitarian aesthetic of an everyday tool that defines it, the Yacht-Master isn’t exactly meant to be a practical daily driver. On the contrary – it’s aimed at those who partake in luxury boating on the high seas and therefore has a much more affluent aura about it.
The latest ref. 126622 (here its 126622-0001 due to its slate dial) comes equipped with a steel Oyster case that gives it the strength and versatility that Rolex is known for, topped by a matt-blasted platinum bezel with polished raised Arabic numerals and sides. The case’s 40 mm size guarantees that it will fit most wrists very well and – together with the blend of polished and brushed surfaces – makes the watch quite viable as a dress piece. The cherry on top has to be the gorgeous grey sunray dial (also called slate) adorned with luminous white gold indices and contrasting broad blue hands, which play with the light in ways that need to be seen to be believed.
Inside, protected by the solid caseback, the remarkable, latest-generation caliber 3235 is ticking steadily away.
