In 1967 – prompted by the requirments of saturation diving, which was quickly coming into vogue – Rolex introduced the iconic Sea-Dweller. The 126600 50th anniversary pays reverence to the brand’s heritage and closely follows the design language of the original.
The SD43 Red features a helium-escape valve, which expels the helium gas that seeps into the case during prolonged deep dives. Speaking of depth, the watch is waterproof down to 4,000 feet (1,220 meters), which ranks it among the most advanced dive watches in the world.
Rolex developed the Sea-Dweller in collaboration with both the US Navy and French Comex divers, so its professional-grade specs are hardly surprising. It sports a 43 mm case in 904L steel, a cyclops-magnified date display, and a unidirectional 60-minute bezel fashioned out of ceramic.
Behind the brushed-steel caseback, the in-house cal. 3235 is ticking steadily away.
