Designed to enable the wearer to tell the time in two different time zones simultaneously, the GMT-Master was developed as a navigation instrument for professionals traveling the globe. Its combination of effortless functionality, robustness, and instantly recognizable aesthetics has made it a horological and cultural icon, which, over the last few decades, has blossomed into one of Rolex’s most diverse collections. The GMT-Master II Coke ref. 16710 is among the more sought-after reinterpretations of the original model. Rolex launched the ref. 16710 in 1989, superseding the 16760 with a slimmer case profile. It came equipped with one of three available bezel layouts: plain black, red and blue (Pepsi), or black and red (Coke). While the brand’s modern ceramic bezels are smoother and shinier, the older aluminium versions often come with richer, deeper colors, which many enthusiasts prefer over the alternative.
The watch here sports a black dial that matches the black bezel. It is a rare transitional version with the Swiss only inscription made for a short period between 1998 and 1999. The ref. 16710 is powered by the calibre 3185 – an automatic dual time superlative chronometer movement.
