Created in 1945, the Datejust was the first self-winding waterproof chronometer wristwatch to display the date at 3 o’clock. Its timeless aesthetic has since had an enormous cultural impact and, along with its revolutionary features, has elevated it to the status of a horological icon. To put it simply, the Datejust is the seminal classic watch. The example on offer here – ref. 126334 – represents a contemporary interpretation of its predecessor’s time-tested features.
The watch comes outfitted with a 41 mm stainless steel Oyster case, which provides a water-resistance of up to 100m (330 feet), and a fluted bezel made from 18k White Gold. The Oyster bezel originally had a functional purpose – to seal the case and ensure its waterproofness – but is now more a mark of distinction. The “bright black” dial is beautifully simple and easily legible and features white gold Chromalight indices, which provide excellent contrast against the dark backdrop. The only disturbance to the dial’s otherwise-perfect symmetry is brought on by the Cyclops-magnified date display at 3 o’clock. The ref. 126334 is powered by the latest generation caliber 3235 automatic movement, which boasts a power reserve of 70 hours.
