In 1860 Officine Panerai started life as a watchmaker’s shop where the brand’s founder, Giovani Panerai, also sold maritime equipment. Years later, in the early 1900s, the brand became the official supplier for the Italian Frogmen, who famously used its watches – partially designed and produced by Rolex SA – to time and synchronize their attacks on docked enemy ships. As you can imagine, a dependable and legible underwater instrument was an absolute must for the Frogmen, and that’s exactly what Panerai provided. The brand also supplied the Royal Italian Navy with all manner of technical equipment and precision instruments, thus further cementing its place in the history of professional watches.
The watch on offer here – the Luminor Due PAM00674 – strongly resembles its predecessors, but is in actuality a second iteration of the iconic model, hence the name (which means “two” in Italian). Its large cushion-shaped case and protruding crown guard are both considered defining staples of Panerai design, and it’s not at all hard to see why they’re so beloved by the Paneristi. The layout of the dial remains unchanged, but the dial itself showcases greater attention to detail with its satin-like texture and reflective hands. What’s more, the case thickness has been greatly reduced, which will certainly not go unappreciated by smaller-framed fans; the real treat, however, lies inside. The in-house cal. P.4000 movement is remarkably engineered, beautifully decorated, and is wound via micro-rotor. It offers 3 days of power reserve.
