Out of all the Speedmasters that Omega has produced over the years, few have come as close to the original Moon watch as the ref. 311.30.42.30.01.005. Just like the one worn by Neil Armstrong, this model features a Hesalite crystal instead of a scratch-resistant sapphire one. Now, you might be wondering why this Speedmaster is not automatic, and the answer to that is quite simple – because the original Moon watch wasn’t either. Since there is no gravity in space, the rotor wouldn’t have wound the mainspring properly, so Omega opted for the use of a hand-wound movement instead. In fact, the caliber 1863 is identical to the one that powered the Moon watch.
Just like the original, the 311.30.42.30.01.005 features a black dial with a small seconds sub-dial, a 30-minute recorder, a 12-hour recorder, and a central chronograph hand. The black bezel, with its tachymetric scale, is mounted on a 42 mm stainless steel case.
