The Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph is an important watch because, among other things, it commemorates a remarkable event that IWC sponsors as an official timekeeper. It celebrates the Volvo Yacht Race – one of the most grueling sporting events in the world. Unfolding over close to 9 months and passing through innumerable ports, the regatta pushes both the skippers (that’s what the captain of a yacht is called) and their machines to the limit – including the ones strapped to their wrists. The Portuguese, of course, more than lives up to the challenge, having been blessed by IWC’s engineering mastery.
Aesthetically, this titanium sports chronograph pulls no punches, generously giving away the source behind its inspiration. A carbon-fiber dial rendered in white-on-black and encased in a traditionally-proportioned case blends the old with the new, resulting in a thoroughly impressive timepiece. At its hearth, the in-house Caliber 89361 is ticking calmly away.
