When IWC introduced the Mark 11 in 1948, the Ministry of Defence described it as “…a highly accurate timepiece suitable for astronavigation purposes”, while the RAF famously used it to calculate the exact position of their aircraft. It is hardly surprising, then, that many collectors consider the Mark 11 among the most significant timepieces in military history.
As a worthy successor to the Mark 11, the watch on offer here celebrates IWC’s close partnership with the British navy.
The Pilot Mark XVI comes outfitted with a stainless steel case that mirrors the flawless proportions of the Mark 11 but whose size has been increased to a balanced 39 mm. The dial is as easily-legible as ever, but it is more reminiscent of an aircraft instrument than of its predecessor’s design. That same dial is the reason behind the Mark 11’s thickness, but the Mark XVI is barely 11.5 mm thick, so it wears beautifully and fits under the cuff without effort. Unlike most pilot’s watches, it even features a stealthy date display.
The Pilot Marx XVI is powered by the automatic caliber 30110 – ticking accurately behind the classically simple stamped caseback.
Our offering is in good condition (with some normal wear in form of hairline scratches on the bezel, case, and bracelet), comes in a full set of boxes and papers, and is fitted with its original stainless steel bracelet.
Covered by a limited warranty of 1 year, starting on the date of purchase.
