In the last decade or so, there’s hardly been a shortage of emerging brands that claim involvement in Haute Horlogerie. That’s precisely what makes CVSTOS such an intriguing phenomenon. Not many find the brand’s name familiar, but that’s their gain, and – dare we say – everybody else’s loss. In case you were wondering, it comes from the Latin word for “Guardian” and aims to convey the brand’s fervent devotion to watchmaking traditions. CVSTOS’s timepieces are handcrafted in a small atelier located in Geneva’s Saint Gervais district. It is housed in a traditional shop-fronted building at the foot of rue Voltaire, which also contains the brand’s Operations department. The building’s ground floor is home to a concept store and often hosts exclusive soirées, where the only entrance requirement is a CVSTOS watch. While this certainly boosts the perceived exclusivity of the brand, its masterfully-crafted pieces more than live up to the image it strives to forge for itself.
The watch on offer here stands in firm confirmation of that fact. The CVSTOS Challenge JetLiner SL II GT represents a union of traditional watchmaking and modern design and engineering. It comes equipped with a curved, skeleton-like titanium case, whose frame is covered in a flawless hairline finish. The faults in between the “beams” have been left raw and display titanium’s natural grain, as well as its dark grey color. The crown is fitted with a rubber lining, which provides additional grip and matches the color of the strap, which, in turn, compliments the color palette of the titanium elements. Fittingly, the dial is skeletonized and proudly displays the heart of the watch, which pulses calmly behind a sapphire crystal canvas. The CVSTOS Challenge JetLiner SL GT is powered by the automatic caliber CVS350 – a finely-finished automatic movement, which features a tungsten rotor and a power reserve of 42 hours.
