Founded in 1955, Montres Corum Sàrl – commonly referred to simply as Corum – is known for its high-quality limited edition watches. While many companies have tried and failed at the Limited Edition business model, Corum has not only succeeded – it has earned the respect and admiration of watch enthusiasts along the way. This is largely thanks to the unique aesthetic and bold design of its watches, which draw inspiration from everything from sporting events to historical figures and mythical creatures.
The watch on offer here was inspired by Baron Samedi, the loa of the dead.
In Haitian Vodou, the loa are beings that serve as mediators between Bondye – the creator of the world – and humanity. Baron Samedi presides over both death and fertility, arguably making him the most powerful and important loa. He is known for his propensity for disruption, obscenity and debauchery and his fondness for tobacco and rum. His face, as seen on the dial, has become synonymous with non-conformity and individuality. It’s covered by the unmistakable bubble crystal, which creates a magnifying lens effect. The inclined steel case is brushed and the bezel is diamond-set, making the watch appear all that more stylish and exclusive – and it is indeed exclusive; this piece is one of only 177 produced, as the display-back proudly states. It offers no shortage of remarkable little details to admire, such as the skeletonized stylized hands and the ball-shaped screw-down crown, which was fitted with a rubber ring for additional grip. The watch is in pristine condition and is powered by a beautifully refinished ETA cal. 2892A2. The word VOODOO can be seen on the rotor – and spelled out with bones at that. The original leather-strap is also in incredible condition as is the signature clasp. In conclusion, if you think this extraordinary piece isn’t for you, then it probably isn’t. Our offering is in very good condition and shows only minimal wear, even the strap is almost brand new. Comes as watch only.
